Blog mera tera charcha ho!

Girlfriends... nothing in this world can replace them. Lesser is a woman who doesn't have a girlfriend who will travel 100s of miles just to tell her that she was missed. Some friends stay on for life. Some people become friends by accident. Circumstantial. But the true friendship is one where you allow the other person to laugh at your in-front of complete strangers.

You are in company of a true friend when she will call you a bitch and give you a hug at the same time. Your best friend is the one who will call you on a very busy day... and will be like... "Listen... are you busy?" and if you reply "yes!" they simply say... "Oh ok... but listen to this..." and then go on to say the most unimportant thing... that could have waited until the next year.

I have one such friend, who I rediscovered last week... We found each other... and how. You know who you are.. You have been my punching bag. You have seen me more drunk than anyone else. You picked me up and gave me the strength to walk when I thought it was impossible.

You are the only person who could tell me that I am wrong. You are also the only person who believed in me when I didn't believe in myself.

I can sit next to you for hours and not feel the need to talk. You finish my sentences. You cover-up my lies... even without me briefing you. The crazy times I had with you, can make for some really fun read.

You never receive calls. But when I need you the most I know you will fly down wherever I am. just so you can give me that hug and assure me that it will all fall in place.

I pity people who never had a friend who have accepted them with their flaws, and love them a little more because of them. You are not a friend, you are family. You are my alter ego.

Everyone hears what you say. Friends listen to what you say. Best friends listen to what you don’t say. How true.

Act Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

I have a problem. Okay, to be fair I have many problems, but some are more equal than the others. We go on in life with a vision and a plan, oftentimes they don't fructify. The fructification of our plans are solely dependent on us, not some external spiritual being... (I want to say God, but don't want to offend anyone)
Why is it then in life, when things don't go our way we try and shift the blame onto something else or even someone else?
Fate. God. Destiny.
Never do we hear us say... I screwed up, hence this.
Why is it so difficult to accept the mistakes that shape our lives?
When will we realize, the first step towards making a change in our own lives is to know that there was a mistake made... more often by us than by others. Once you have identified that, then fixing it and making life a better place comes easy.
I have surprised myself multiple times with goof ups that at that time seemed irrevocable. Most mistakes/goof ups are that. But 5 years down the line I look back at all that as an experience that is called life.
Long back I had decided... I wont let any judgement error rule or dictate or shape my life. Accept that it was an error in judgement. Move on. Never make that same mistake again.
There is only one thing and person who can call shots in our lives, our will to change, learn adapt and we ourselves. Nothing or no one else can... they can try but they will never succeed.
So let's stop playing victim to circumstances we created.
“We all make mistakes and sometimes there’s just no way to go back and fix them. But we can move forward wiser and more in control of our own lives.” – Susan Gale.

Chitrangada - The Warrior Princess...

I have been told many a times that Bengali women are different... Some call us loud, others independent, a few dominating but never meek.

Frankly speaking if you ask me,I have never really analyzed this ever, I just lived with the values I was brought up with. The way I saw all women in my life, that's exactly how I grew up to be. I don't know much about human nature or anthropology, be it social or cultural...or how people from each region behave. I do know one thing that I was taught as a kid... fight for the weak, stand up for yourself and the bullied. Never raise a hand on anyone, but if a hand is raised at you... break it.

That stuck with me. Growing up, we would be exposed to a whole lot of Bengali literature, poetry, music etc...Chitrāngadā, the story of the warrior princess from Manipur, was one such.

Chitrāngadā, a single child of the king of Manipur and the heir to the throne, dressed like a man and was the protector of the land. One day, she meets Arjun (Pandava from Mahabharata), and seeing his prowess as a hunter, she falls in love with him. However she believed he could never love her the way she was, and transformed herself into a beautiful feminine woman. When she met Arjun, enthralled by her beauty, he couldn't help but fall in love with her. However deep down the desire to be loved the way she truly was.. stayed alive. When Manipur came under attack, the people went in search of their warrior princess... Hearing her story, Arjun, now impressed and intrigued, longed to meet her. Chitrāngadā appeared and saved her kingdom before revealing her true self to Arjun.

There is this one song that comes at the end of the play... When Arjun proposed marriage to her, her introduction of herself and her conditions for her man, epitomized all that is a woman to me.

I am Chitrāngadā , a princess from a line of great kings
No goddess am I, nor an ordinary woman.
I do not crave worship nor ask to be exalted
No, that’s not me,
That you should ask me in passing to follow behind
No, that’s not me.
I ask to be at your side
In both the good times and ill,
And that you allow yourself to share
Equally in the penances that may come,
Then will you know my worth.
Today I just say unto you –
I am Chitrāngadā , a princess from a line of great kings

Armed Forces a whole new Tribe!

Culture is something that a person is born into… but is also forever evolving! I come from a totally civilian background… meaning neither my father nor anyone else from my family has ever stepped into a military organization let alone be part of one! Till I got married some 15 years back: I didn’t know that “Civilian” was a type of culture… or for that matter the “Armed Forces” that I got married into, is a clan or as I prefer to call it a “tribe” by itself!

For a complete civilian like me the whole armed forces culture was a paradigm shift! Over here ladies eat before the men. Officers would always call the lady “Ma’am” unless otherwise requested! The first man would take a seat after the last lady has taken hers! But well one can say that’s British Chivalry that makes the armed forces the way they are… Ok, so go figure this out... you invite 10 people for dinner 22 turn up… the extra 12 are what we call “bouncers”… no they don’t come bouncing in… or maybe they actually do! They are the proud gate crashers… in this culture the number of gate crashers are a symbol of the hosts popularity!

Worse still imagine this scenario… you have retired for the night, as you are not well… at 10 pm you get a group of 15 bachelors come home… asking you to cook meal… or better still saying “we’d eat whatever you have cooked” (how considerate… normal people always have leftovers that can feed 15 hungry men! right?!). So when you say “we have already had our dinner as I am not well” the answer you get is quite contrary to what you expect - “That’s alright, Ma’am. We will have whatever you make!”, and all this because they think you are really nice and cool… and its their way of showing love and respect! One would think that all these should be really irritating right? On the contrary after the first few incidents, I now invite 15 and cook for 25… and always have some quick fire recipes in mind for the odd 10 bachelors who decide to “bounce” me for dinner… and weekends I always have 3 litres of milk boiled and kept for the stray cat…or the fighter pilot who might drop in at 0230 am for a cup of coffee! I don’t mind I am privileged and happy to be part of this tribe!

I Wish I Knew...

Every time I listen to this song... I can't help remembering a friend of mine. Remembered him again... The recent abduction and killing of Lt Ummer Fayaz again brought those memories to the forefront.

It's as though it was just yesterday when he would come home and fight with me about inane things... or when he would waltz into our bedroom with his wife and boast about how nicely color coordinated their clothes are. :)
Or how when we were in Jodhpur he ould come to our place with a huge watermelon and sit and cut and eat it all by himself :) ... Yes he was capable of that....

Then there was the time when I threw him out of my house... don't remember why... but yes I fought with him as though he was the biggest slimeball...

How everytime we went for a party he and his wife would come with us... and I will make them sit at the back of our jeep and on the way back because of the chilling winter of North India I would con him into sitting next to my hubby....

How we could just pack our stuff and walk into their house ... once they moved to a different city and stay with them...

How my only regret was not saying bye to him properly...

I wish I gave him a tight hug.... If I knew that will be the last time I will see him... I would have said bye to him... like it was the last time ever...

I wish I knew when I threw him out of my house that after two years... I will wish for the same banter...

I wish I had got more opportunity to tell him how much he irritated me :(

I still remember the last new year card he sent us... Happy New Year to Bozo Bandi and Indica... He was a sweet little devil... But a lovable one at that....

When a friend dies, one isn't truly forgotten...

Specially when touched by the lives of others, without asking
From heart to heart, in such a loving, caring and unique fashion
When a friend dies, one isn't truly gone...
Though departed in the physical but remains in my mind's gate
With me forever, regardless of their untimely fate.

All those people whose lives you have touched... can never forget you... Should have written this when the pain was still raw... but then would not have been able to keep the pain from my post... maybe that's why I remembered you yesterday... and wanted to so say thanks for everything :)

We love you. We will miss you always... At times I think that this is all a very very bad joke... But then I realize that no one is laughing....

Strong Women - Unicorn of the Human Race?

Are women strong? Or is it the male dominated society's way of telling women to be emotionally unavailable. Will the world be a better place if we were all emotionally unavailable? A place where no one pours their heart out. Not coz they don't know how, but coz they don't feel the need to. A perfect place where its every man or woman for himself/herself.

Is that the world we would be happier living in? Is that the society that I would want my 13 year old daughter to grow up in?

If a woman is emotionally available then does that make her a weak person?

Is a strong woman the present day unicorn of the human society? Is it fair on our part to expect the so called strong woman to always have her act together? Is she not entitled to a momentary lapse of sanity? Should her image of a strong woman as set by the societal expectations overrule her need for a support system?

A system that won't question her decisions with "Come on! How can you say that?" Its more difficult for us to come out in the open an accept that we need help. That's when the support system steps in...Without our personal emotional trainers we will all fall apart. But seeking help doesn't a weak woman make. It just makes you a strong person with momentary weakness.

Its hard to find people who will love you no matter what. When you do that... hold onto them for dear life :)

Epitaphs... The Dead Inside

Some one recently asked me, what would my epitaph say. Got me thinking... how do you sum up a whole life's experiences in two to four lines? How do you convey it all in 60 words or less? We live our whole life  looking, running, seeking and running some more. Sometimes towards experiences and sometimes away from them. How do you sum it all up?

Walking through the cemetery at the St. John in the Wilderness Church, McLeodgunj... I couldn't but help think of that.

Every time I visit any cemetery, be it the South Park Street Cemetery in Kolkata or any other... I always make it a point to stop and read the carvings on each and every tomb. It's a surreal feeling. When I was 15, I was moved by one such grave of a little girl who died at the tender age of 15, exactly the same age as I was then. Now I am 40, however she is still 15. Successfully stopping time. Managing to stay forever young. While I grew up, enriched with experiences, some beautiful, some bittersweet...

Every grave has a story to tell, yet those laid there must have had so many more stories and dreams and aspirations that were buried with their mortal remains. The epitaphs on their tombs don't even begin to do justice to who they were.

I stop to look at few more, some who died in action in some war, some of old age, some when they were merely 10 days old. Laid to rest by their families, almost a century back. Now gathering dust...A grave also hosts the unfulfilled dreams of all those who wait patiently for a visit from their loved ones, for a candle to be lit...a tear to be shed. Hoping that someone, somewhere is remembering them....

I go back home... still wondering what my epitaph would say?

Her who dared to dream, here lies she,
The dreamer of dreams, from strife is set free.
Finally her wings are at rest, after her flight,
Her caravan has parked for the eternal night.

Keep Calm : Take Up A 30 Day Challenge.

Sometimes our lives can get so caught up with the day to day mundanes... that we forget what it was like to have a simpler life. When at times, we have the time to sit back and think about it... we want to do all those small little simple things that are normally so easy to do but we never find the time for. I, over the last few days, came up with over 12 such simple activities that in isolation may not mean much but when done as a regime... can be quite life altering.

This is going to be the year of 30 day challenges... one challenge each month.

April: Water up

Water is that magical liquid that can help us get our life on track...it suppresses appetite, aids in digestion, fights bloating, tones out muscles, flushes the toxins out of our systems, reduces cholesterol , helps liver function, and last but not the least stops us from confusing hunger with thirst.

May: No more Nail bites

I bite my nails. It's a habit that bothers me and is something I have wanted to stop doing all my life, I am going to make a change and phase this habit out of my life. They say anything you do for 30 days in a row... becomes habit formin... I pledge to quit nail biting for 30 days!

June: Get out and breathe in

Couch Potato, that I am ... I end up staying indoors most days. I find myself spending most of my days cooped up inside looking at a computer screen, some fresh air will definitely be more helpful, with this challenge I make it a point to get out every day and breathe in some fresh air. Walk for an hr every day, come hell or high water

July: ARK/Complement time

Putting a smile on someone else’s face is always a guaranteed way to put a smile on our faces too! I vow to take the next 30 days either completing one act of random kindness or giving a compliment to someone every single day and see if making others happy makes me happier too.

August: Create something beautiful every day.

Too often we fail to make time for the things we most love to do. I promise to carve a few minutes out of my day for 30 days straight to spend on it.

Spending time doing things we love and working on our passions is a surefire way to be happier and feel more fulfilled!

September: This is the month to give up tea.

I am a huge tea addict (I’m guilty!), it will be challenging to see if I can go entire 30 days without consuming tea and replacing it with green tea.

Perhaps at the end of 30 days I will still want to have my usual morning tea, but maybe not and will be comfortable with green tea and can feel good about it.

October: Month long spring cleaning

I you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the amount of clutter and general stuff in my home lately, I decided to use this opportunity to ease into the process of decluttering and freeing up space. So I will be donating, tossing, or selling just one item a day for 30 days in a row.

November: Read a book

Can't remember the last time I read a book. Not because I had to, but just for the sake of enjoying a good book?

It can be difficult to carve time out of a day to cozy up with a good book and let myself get lost in it, but it always feels so amazing when we do that! It’s good to let our mind wander and just enjoy a good story or even learn something new. I will try reading one chapter of a book every night before bed for the next 30 days and see if it helps me feel more relaxed and maybe even inspire me.

December: Connect Outside Social Media

We are all so engrossed in FB/Instagram etc... that we have forgotten how to connect with our friends in real life. I take this opportunity to connect with one friend from Social media world, everyday for the next 30 days.

January: Cook or bake something new each day.

All those who know me know that I hate to cook/bake. SO I take it upon myself to prove them wrong. So this month I will cook/bake something new everyday. and document the recipe and the experience.

February: Watch a film a day

This is the month of love and romance... I will make it a point to watch one movie a day for the next 30 days, start watching it and finish it, and write one thing that I likes good about the movie I saw. One line of appreciation.

March: Spend 30 days being a vegetarian or vegan

I am a complete non vegetarian... so its time I keep an open mind about vegetarian. So here is my challenge keep and open mind and eat only veg food for 30 days.

Fidelity: A state of the mind?

My friends are my window to the world. They are my constant source of information about the current dating scenario. I won't lie, I take immense interest in their lives, not only because I love them, but also because they never cease to amaze me about what it is like to date in your mid 30s- mid 40s, in this era or technology.

With the onset of online messengers, and dating apps, everyone is connected 24x7. A message at 11:53, as innocent as "Hey, I like your DP" from a long lost colleague or an ex is no longer public knowledge. Gone are those days that the only means of connect was a landline or a mobile phone... even the internet boom and plethora of online dating websites perhaps didn't change the dating demography as much as the advent of smartphones did.

Thus adultery, infidelity or extramarital affairs however you refer to them, is slowly becoming everyday occurrences. I read somewhere, that a person's tolerance towards infidelity is directly proportional to the extent their own moral compass would let them drift. To someone even casual flirting with a person of opposite sex is deception, while for some other, physical intimacy doesn't count as adultery if there is no emotional connect.

So, is that what it is all about? Is fidelity just a state of mind? Why do people seek? I refuse to use the word stray... as that has a negative connotation.

Are they really seeking pleasure outside of their current relationships? Or are they desperately trying to look for the person, that they were many moons back? That person who is now lost in the mundane routine of day to day existence? The constant search for what they were and escape from what they have become.

To be noted here is that I am not condoning infidelity, I am just playing a devil's advocate... trying to understand why people tend to look outwards in a relationship. May be it's never about the third person, maybe it's about rediscovering themselves. Maybe if a couple is evolving together, everyday and never lose that connect with who they were and what they are...  every time they'd look outwards, they'd only find each other. Adding dimensions to their lives, marriage, relationships, and as a result their own selves.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Dear Daughter...

                                                     Pic courtesy: Google Image Search

Dear Daughter,

You are going to be 13 soon, a teenager. A young adult.

Soon you will leave home. (precisely 5 yrs time) I know its a scary thought. And I ain't going to sugar coat it. In the next 5 years you will have all the support you can from us. If you choose to study further. I will be burning the midnight oil with you. If you choose not to... you will HAVE to start to work. If that happens, then you will have to be independent. I am not that mom who will support all your whims and pay for your wants, thus driving home the point that there indeed are no free lunches in this world. Coz, my dear daughter, there aren't any. Sooner you learn that, that much easier this life will be for you. You have five years to decide...While you are at it... I think I will make your room into a studio for my art work :)

You are a wonderful and beautiful child, you always have been. I was not even remotely as good are you are now. (No wonder my mother wishes your were her daughter!). I’ve known you for almost 13 years, and you are way way more awesome than I could ever imagine my daughter to be... even when I kept praying for a girl child. Always remember, if someone doesn't understand that... then that's their problem... never yours.

Never ever, consider me as an idol/example. You and I are like chalk and cheese. You have a different personality, I have my own. We don't have to like/dislike the same things/people. I give you all the freedom to choose your own destiny, values and devils. However, the fallout of this is: You have to own all your decisions, the good, the bad and even the ugly ones. I take no responsibility whatsoever.

Whether you choose to become a high flying corporate woman, a bartender, a belly dancer, a struggling artist or just a stay home mother... I will never judge you. It's not in my place to interfere in any of your life choices.

Remember, it was our duty to bring you up as a good human being. It is not an investment towards our future. I don't expect you to take care of me and provide for my old age, similarly I don't expect you to shape your life hoping for an inheritance from us. What we earn is for our future, and to ensure that we don't burden you in your future.

Whatever path you choose for yourself, remember, I will always be your there for you 24x7. I will laugh with you and cry with you in your sorrow. I will be ready with my advise if you so seek, but never extend it uninvited. However, remember I will always have my own life and not be there to help you at the snap of your fingers. I don't have to, neither will I, sacrifice my personal space for every comfort of yours. I can. But don't HAVE to.

As you grow up you will realize that there is no formula for success or to avoid failure. You can't control every situation. You can do everything right and still have a crappy life while at the same time do all things wrong and still end up with a fairy-tale life. The only thing that you can control is being honest to yourself. Never lie to your own self. Learn to understand yourself. Your needs. Your happiness. Only when you are truly happy can you be happy for others.

Remember, ever action of yours will have a consequence. You will never be able to foresee them. But try and be prepared for every conceivable outcome that you can imagine. The more number of outcomes you can imagine that much more easier it will be for you to decide upon each course of action that you take.

I’ve enumerated 8 points that I consider as life hacks. But, as I said above, you are not me. Don’t compare yourself to me. Don’t think that our lives should or can correspond in every way. I have lived my life on my own terms, I would expect the one person I have brought into this world to do the same too. Go live your life on your own terms.

8a. Just don’t expect me to fix your mistakes.
8b. And never ignore my calls, how many ever times I call you in the day.

Conversations With Myself.

Sitting in my balcony alone, staring at the only constellation that I can see from my rocking chair. Ursa Minor, in Bengali we call it Saptarshi... the Seven Sages. Yeah, its the one with the Seven stars and shaped like a question mark. Right there in the summer sky looking down at us and challenging us to come up with answers to the questions life throws at us. It got me thinking about how I can keep sitting at the same place taking in the breeze... and the peace and quiet of an Air Force campus. Still not getting bored even for a second. Foundation of this lies in one word...

Satisfaction.

Satisfaction with what you have and enjoying what you have in your life. It is not a sign of weakness it just shows that you are comfortable in your own skin.

I am almost 41, I have stayed in 11 different cities in 10 different states in this country. Growing up as a single child was not easy. You don't always have  a sibling to irritate the brains out of you or whose shoulders you can cry on. Single child can't always look for companionship in the form of hanging out with friends. Cause that would mean becoming a people pleaser, so they give you company. The day you become a people pleaser you lose track of your own existance. This I learnt really early on in my life. I learnt to amuse myself. I learnt to occupy myself with inane stuff.

God has been kind in giving me friends who will go to any lengths for me, and I for them. I thereby don't feel the need to be a people pleaser. I love being alone. Spending time with myself and my thoughts.

Boredom!

I have a very simple take on boredom. If you are bored in your own company... Wow! Imagine what people are going to go through then. We all have voids in our lives. I am happy with them. They give me time to understand myself better. Voids are the best thing that can happen to us. The desperate need to fill that void with random people is a sign of insecurity.

To be able to stand tall and say this is my belief and I stick to it... you like? Good for you! You don't? I couldn't care less.

Marriage- Spaces in Togetherness!

The prophet said "let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bond of love.
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf."

Marriage is not the end of the road. Its is the beginning of our journey with our soulmate. Biggest mistakes most women make is thinking that the girl in them has to die to become a wife. Its not written anywhere that being a wife means we should kill the girl inside us. Keep the girl alive and the wife will glow.

Motherhood!

Taking time out to have a spa day... a weekend out with my girl friends in a quarter... makes me a bad mom? Most people think so. I have had ladies half my age come up to me and asking me to "spend some time at home" so I can be the textbook mommy.

You know what? Maybe you should switch off that TV and read a book to your child!

I go out... I have fun...I don't beat myself with guilt over it later on. I also stay up until 3 am doing my daughters project work. I know my daughter will grow up being spunky and not be a pushover. Coz what I do today my kid takes that to be sacrosanct! I am a woman first. Then a mom and wife...

I am me!

Yes, I am me... I will question your every decision and mine too. I have been brought up that way. Reasoning out and rationalizing everything. I am a little off in the head. I talk to myself. My mom is my best friend. I am not unsocial. But I am not gonna be nice to you just so I can call you my friend. I have friends that bitch on my face. I have been slapped across my face by my friends. But never stabbed behind my back. I laugh at myself. I don't usually get offended with what you say... coz you are not that important.

I totally understand that it is not possible to be universally liked/loved etc, however if I. being the way I am, have been able to touch even one life, and have been able to positively influence it, I would feel I have succeeded.

Sounds of Silence.

When silence speaks it's the loudest noise that you can ever hear. And no, I am not talking about the silence at the dead of the night. I am talking about the silence in your head. The silence that comes not just after you stop talking but after your thoughts have also stopped talking as well. It's then that you can hear the silence in your head, in your mind.

What you hear then, is what your soul has to say.

Since the time I remember me, or anyone for that matter...my mentors, teachers, parents, neighbors all had only one complaint... "She is very talkative... She talks incessantly." I guess the reason for such verbal diarrhea,is my absolute hatred towards uncomfortable silence. All my life I have felt responsible to break the silence and keep the conversation flowing. I do it with elan too...

Which is also the reason why I always felt that silence is overrated. Until I reached the Vipasanna Meditation Center in Kolkata. My first thoughts were that I will die without talking... internet... and civilization.

Strangely though, I kept myself entertained with my myriad thoughts the first 3 days. However the 4th day all hell broke loose. I wanted to break all barriers and run away... I contemplated selling my watch for a phone from the neighborhood boys who I could see from the terrace. I contemplated stealing the volunteer's phone to call up my husband so as to just hear his voice.

By the time day 4 ended I was sure I will run away. And then came the 5th day... when my thoughts and all unrest in my head and mind died a slow painful death, and I started hearing the silence in my head. The silence that spoke a thousand words that I didn't hear as a gregarious talker. The words which were suppressed every time with my anecdotes and jokes and elaborate narratives... suddenly found a new lease of life.

I spent the next few days at the camp letting my silence have its own conversation with my thoughts. I went through a day or an afternoon of absolute forgiveness... wherein I admitted to myself to have wronged a number of people in my life. I think the biggest penance that one can do is accept ones own mistakes. That is always the first step. And a step in that direction is half the battle won.

The sounds of Silence that spoke to me in those 10 days at the camp might have moved me the most. Now that I am back to the reality. The noise of life may have suppressed the the voices of my soul... but somewhere inside my head I know that my soul is still alive and has the ability to wake up and tell me what I am doing wrong. I may and I know I will choose to ignore that feeble voice, but a day will come when I will have to pay attention to it. And act upon it. And then act I will! Until then... live in the moment.

Legacy.

Dislcaimer: This is a fictional piece written during a story telling workshop, any resemblance to any person or incident is purely coincidental.

Sitting alone on my balcony with my 3rd single malt in hand, I am looking over the busy streets and the noise that makes Gurgaon  a millennium city. At 48, my life is complete. Love of my husband, success at my job. I have worked incessantly for 25 years of my life, to earn my space in this materialistic world.

I wonder if I die today what will be my legacy? Will my kids remember me for my carelovewisdom? Will my husband remember me for my commitment and honestly. I want to think yes, but if I am entirely truthful I think my legacy will be my penthouse.

How did I land here? Where is that optimistic passionate person who would fight against hypocrisysocietal norms and conventions and take the world head on? Today, as I think of true love, I think I still regret breaking up with my first boyfriend, just because he didn’t confirm to the so called group dynamics of my best friends

Was that first step towards losing my innocence? And beginning of my manipulative life. As insecurity crept into my mind, fear and jealousy took over my core values…and in my aggression towards success I started using my colleagues and friends as stepping stones towards the next promotion.

Suddenly my son breaks my chain of thought… the bell rings and I see him rushing out to take the pizza that the delivery boy has got in. I smile at his innocence and sheer happiness at being able to eat junk food for dinner.

This takes me back to the time when all us cousins would sit around the fire on a cold winter night playing antaskshari and my mom would come with a glass of haldi mixed doodh, a perfect shield for a menacingly cold winter night. I remember my Dadi’s pre independence stories, and how each story would end with the moral of appreciating inner beauty. Huddled together somehow these sessions always  made us feel safe.

All this nostalgia, tears me up. While I am respected and loved by most, I wonder if I still have the power to accept myself for who I have become. This conflict of instant gratification and my beliefs is never ending. Having completed ¾ of my life, do I have the power to renounce the toxic shell that I have built around myself and embrace the real me? In the process become a complete person, make my roots strong… spread my branches wide and high with leaves that are always green and healthy. Do I have it in me to leave a legacy for my children that they will always remember me by? The legacy of happy memories... of doodh haldi... of time spent... of huddled winter evenings with masala chai and pakora and ghost stories...

Shelf Lives and Expiration Dates

Walking through the FoodHall at DLF Promenade, I was amazed at the wide variety of food items. Each carefully categorized and marked, my mind couldn't stop wondering how simple life would be if everything came marked with its own expiry date.

Every relationship with its own shelf life, carefully stowed away and savored until it reaches its expiry date. Life would be simpler cause then it will be easier to move on.

No heartbreaks... no insecurities... no bad blood. Just a constant reminder that we need to make most of what is left in the relationship jar before it expires. While all the time carefully and consciously stocking up for the next set of relationship jars.

Relationships are also categorized in sets of consumer durables and perishables. The durable ones are the ones that we treat like most durables in our lives...very similar to the furniture in our house. As always paying more than required attention to the perishables.

Typical.

However it's the durable ones that pull us through every time the perishables expire.

Every relationship has its shelf life. Sometimes we outlive the shelf life... sometimes the shelf life outlives us...

Down But Not Out!

That moment when you just crack a random joke
So the world thinks that you are ok
When you know that although you are a fine bloke
You are somehow still standing on the crossway...

Wondering what went wrong...
Trying hard to stay positive
Just as you have done all your lifelong.
Down but not out... and never passive.

Life... you can push me on the floor.
But you can't keep me down.
I swear I will swim back ashore
I swear I will score a touchdown!

A True Marriage of Minds

On the 2nd of Feb 2002, 15 years ago , we made a choice. It was a choice that was the most important and significant. One that would shape our lives for years to come.

On that day, we chose to be life partners. At that time the decision seemed final and irrevocable.
Now, once I have spent 15 years with you I know a choice of a life partner is not a one time thing, it's a forever evolving and ongoing process.

Many times over the past 15 years, I have chosen you again. Faced with changes and alternatives, I have become aware again and again that a marriage lasts only if both partners prioritise each other and are friends.

Like every other couple our lives have been affected by highs and lows, I would be lying if I say that the thought of going in the opposite direction didn't occur to me.

It Did. But I did not.

The only reason I didn't was because no one in the past had ever and can ever in future elicit as many feelings of happiness, joy, love and madness as have you...

I have chosen you over all, and choose you still. Not because I feel obliged to take care of you, but because you take care of me. I live with you, move from one city to another, and from one house, that we make home, to another, not because a legal document binds us. I live with you, because there is nowhere else I would rather be than by your side.

I love you, but more than love, you are and will always be my best friend.

The Bucket List

Time flew... searching short stories. 41st is almost here... and I realized that not too many of those short stories were worth it. Life is whizzing by... or am I running too fast and life is just standing at one place? Nevertheless... I have decided to take life by its collar... and make it keep pace with me. Mind and body need to be in sync and if they refuse to be... one of them needs to buck up or be left behind.  The latter is not acceptable. So the former has to work!

I hence sat and compiled a list of all that I thought I want up my sleeve by the time I am 45. May 23, 2021. That gives me 4+ yrs to make up for all the lost time.

Compiling a list of 45 before 45 :)

1. Read a classical novel in its entirety.

There are so many beautiful books out there... for years...waiting to be read. Where the language is perfect and the people dignified. The morbid 50 shades trilogy can wait and so can the Chetan Bhagats and the Mills and Boons.

Time to pick up one of those dusty yet evergreen books. My choice is Wuthering Heights. Someone who I don't wanna name once told me that everyone should read that book.

May be this year I will.

2. Smile at a complete stranger

We all stay in the concrete jungle...running from pillars to posts living the big city dream. No one has time to stop and stare... forget about smiling. Someone who knows me one day had mentioned that "Bandi when you walk on the road why do you always look like you are running against time? Frowning and calculating every minute."

To me it seemed the most natural thing to do. But today at this crossroad I am thinking... if I just stop and stare and smile at a stranger... and walk up to him/her and say... "Hey I couldn't help but observe that you have really pretty eyes..."

You think I will get shunned? I don't think so. Why is it that we don't think twice before smiling at a kid but will avoid even eye contact with an adult. The fear of being judged? Time to find out why!

(Not only did I smile...I had a conversation with a stranger)

3. Sing karaoke.

This is think is one of the toughest things on the list here for me... I like to think I am good singer...when I sing along... but just reading out the words off a screen and singing.... hmm that will be something. May be it will happen then year when I go to Goa... after 3 shots of double tequila :)

4. Go camping.

Camping. Hmmm to many its no big deal, but to an out and out city person like me...now that's something. A double man tent by the riverside is what I am thinking. My hubby the soldier will jump at the idea. So this is definitely the most doable. And done, it will be.

5. Go out on a date with myself Goa January 2018

Get dressed. Look my best. Make a reservation for just one person at the swankiest restaurant. Eat alone. Then take myself for a drink at my favourite bar. And finally finish it with watching "Before Midnight" when it hits the theater this year.

6. Take up an acting class.

Even if not a class definitely a workshop. Let go off all the inhibitions and do that one bit role. I actually wanted to put up "play an extra in some TV show." but thats stretching it a bit too far I think. :)

7. Update my blog once a week for the next 12 months (once every Thursday until 31st Jan 2018)

I read somewhere that "If the will to write is not accompanied by real writing then the will is to NOT write".  I know and the few friends who follow my blog knows that I have not been really (to put it mildly) regular with my writing.
Plus I should remember all the stories that I live everyday, so I can one day share it with my grandchildren.

8. Read one positive thought every day and Document it for 30 days in a row.

When I was in college my best friend taught me to wake up every morning and say "I am ok. I am fine. Everybody loves me." Irrespective of what I actually felt. Apparently the Universe is listening.

So ya... 1 positive thought a day it is.

9. Go angling

You are never a true bong if you don't know how to catch fish.
Read a oneliner somewhere that said..."Vegetarian : Old English word for a bad hunter."

The carnivore that I am... How can I allow myself to be a bad hunter? Jokes apart... I have heard that the fun of angling is more about sitting by the riverside with a beer and wait for the fish to catch the bait. I don't care if I catch no fish. But just sitting around watching the river flow waiting for something that may or may not happen sounds relaxing enough.

10. Play the lottery.

I have never been lucky. But that shouldn't deter one from trying. One should never have any what-ifs in life.

11. Volunteer

We have spent our lives chasing dreams and climbing ladders. We have never once stopped to wonder what it's like to not have any dreams. Or worse still, to be too scared to even dream. If my efforts can bring a smile to even one person's face I would consider myself lucky.

12. Vote

I am 40 and I have wasted 22 years of my life not voting. Feel like a fool. I also know that this one wish I may not be able to fulfill even by the time I am 45. But I will try nevertheless. Reason enough for this to be number 12 on the list I guess.

13.  Create something and sell it

The joy of creating something pretty is amazing. But with that is the bigger joy of being able to sell it.
I am yet to figure out what is it that I can sell... but whatever it is I am sure I can get my friends to buy it at-least.

(achieved with with my facebook page... and what pleasure it gives :) )

14. Quit a bad habit.

This should be easy, considering that I have multiple bad habits. I now only need to decide which bad habit I love the least. My friends and family I am sure can think of a few that they want me to quit. Unfortunately they are not at the top of my list.

I am thinking giving up my sedentary life style should be one. My husband will be happiest to read this. But sweetie I also request you to not breathe down my neck asking me when I plan to work on it.

15. Replace my regular tea with green tea for 30 days.

Replacing regular tea with green tea is a great idea from the good health point of view. But who are we kidding it also has the same snoot factor as power yoga :)

16. Bake bread from scratch.

I will never forget the day I went for dinner at one of my friends house... there was all kinds of bread... and what more... all hand made. I suddenly felt like a burden on the face of the earth. So the deal is... I am gonna achieve this. Atleast once. Fresh bread made from scratch.

17. Take a ride in a helicopter

This may be difficult for some... But I am thinking not for me... considering I have more pilot friends than the average Joe.

18. Take up Dancing

I love dancing. This is was a passion that I picked up really early on in life. That time I never actually appreciated the dance lessons I used to take. However now I can give an arm and a leg to go back and relearn it. I will also. Just a matter of time.

19. Walk in the rain, and jump in all the puddles

As a kid I used to sit around stare out of the window at the raindrops falling on the leaves of the trees, the smell of the wet earth can still take me back to those days. The memories of riding my bicycle in the rain with my school bag secured in the plastic cover brings a smile to my face. I would love to relive the simple pleasures of an innocent mind. With the monsoons just around the corner. This should be the first one ticked off the list.

20. Take public transportation for a month.

When was the last time I boarded a bus to go from place A to place B? I don't remember. When was the last time hailing a cab or an auto or taking my car or scooter was NOT the most obvious option? I can't remember. Hence the need to undo that. To fulfill the urge to go back to basics.

21. Learn how to belly dance

There is nothing more elegant than learning an exotic dance form. Belly Dancing has always intrigued me and like they say there is never a bad time to learn a good thing.

22. Learn to change a tyre

Every woman driver should know how to change a tyre. Especially so me. Coz my biggest fear since I learnt to drive was, "What if I have a flat?" Time I took charge of that situation.

23. Go visit a psychic

I am a cynic as far anything supernatural is concerned. But I would really like to experience what its like to visit a psychic. I am sure it will be an experience to share. Another short story to add to my collection.

24. Bungee jump

Bungee jumping is that ultimate leap of faith. That moment before you go in head first can be life changing or so I have heard. Jumping off knowing fully well that your life is at the mercy of technology like the cable that is fastened to you. Well to say the least it can be a pretty humbling experience.

25. Be a qualified paraglider

I want 2017 to be the year I started my first leg of paragliding training. All info has been found out. All I now need to do is sign up for the course.

26. Attain my perfect weight

This is going to be bloody difficult. I aim to reach 60kgs by December 31st. I know that the husband is laughing. But as I always maintained accepting the flaw is half the battle won.

27. Take ballroom dancing lessons

Even if this is just a workshop for a few hours. I am gonna do this sometime. With the husband. So buckle up sweety. You are in for a surprise.

28. Dance on the bar counter

The sheer joy of being completely uninhibited. I don't know any bar in India that allows this. But well this is definitely one of them must dos on my list.

29. Backpack around the 3 states in North India (Any three)

This has been on my wish list for ever. The map has been chalked out. Completing this route is and will be a long time dream come true.

30. Limit my online time (for a month to start with)

Going forward my online time will be reduced to only a few hrs a day apart from what is absolutely necessary for my job. So that means much less of me on FB or Gtalk. But my writing will continue. Documenting my thoughts, so when Hrusha is all grown up she can really know who her mother was. And all that I went through at various stages of my life.

31. Do Vipassana once every year

This is a promise to myself that I am going to calm my mind. Come what may. What better way to do that than by Vipassana. So one very important goal for 2017 is a 10 day course of Vipassana.

32. Write emails

Yes Write emails, to every person I can think of thanking them for the effect they had on my life. I recently realized that we don't thank the people in our lives enough. And at times that results in them not knowing how important they are in our lives. Over the next 4.5 yrs I wish to change that.

33. Work as a part-time bartender

The mental list I had made for my 40 before 40 was to learn bartending. Which I did, now it's time to put those skills to test. So yea atleast once before I turn 45, I plan to work as a part-time bartender.

34Move from Social Media to Real world

We all have so many friends... on Social media, I plan to touch base and connect with each one of them, and catch up with them over coffee or a bite over the next few years. People that I can't connect with, need not be on my list :)

35. Take a vacation All alone Goa Jan 2018

You only discover your self and your roots once your step out of your comfort zone. I am itching to achieve the goal of one vacation all alone, to the place of my choice.

36. Visit one exotic off beat foreign country with husband

Don't know where and definitely don't know when... will keep this space open :)

37. Watch all the Sex and the city seasons with my BFFs

Sex and the city! I know sounds childish but truthfully that's the first ever girl bonding series that we have grown up with. So why not?

(achieved!)

38. Learn the Punjabi language.

Bongs and Punju's have this connect. Don't ask me what... but they do. This will be difficult, but being in Delhi for the next few months shouldn't be Rocket Science.

39. Learn how to ride a bullet

This will be very difficult as my husband is more protective of his bullet than of me... But hmm that should all the more be the reason to make it to my bucket list.

40. Document my bartending Journal

I need to document the bartending recipe book and make it digital. Else all my effort will be down the drain.

41. Give a heartfelt surprise to someone

It’s always heartwarming to come home to a nicely cooked dinner, to have a bouquet of flowers sent to you at work, or to even receive a simple text message from a loved one. Touch one person that means the most to you... Plan a surprise and make his/her day :)

42.Get a drink for a stranger

We all have our good and bad days, why not make someone's bad day good and good day better? It happened with me once, we were in Leh and talking to two firefighters from Canada, once they left the restaurant and we were to pay the bill for the dinner we were told that it was already paid for. I will never forget that feeling or those two people. Next time I go out drinking/coffee I plan to buy one round of Drinks for a stranger.

43.Pack my bags and set off for a random location with no itinerary

I know most items on the list are travel related, can't help it... I am a gypsy soul. But travelling comes with its share of planning and meticulous execution... what if we dont plan at all? Will travel still be as much fun? Time to try out.

44. Try a three week diet of vegetarianism, veganism, raw veganism

Why? Because for a hardcore non vegetarian, I have made fun of most my friends most my life. But Never tried the above mentioned diets.

There are constantly debates on the pros and cons of a veg*n diet, and my though to that is… Try it out for myself and draw the conclusions myself! Even if I don’t stick with a vegan diet at the end, at least I’d know how it’s really like!

45. Plan a perfect Romantic getaway

With all our tight schedules, it’s very difficult to set up quality time with our significant other. I plan to bring back the spark in the relationship by going on a romantic getaway! Be it a dreamy vacation or a simple staycation, anywhere is romantic as long as we’re spending quality time with the person we love.

Having a getaway every once in a while is also beneficial for the relationship as it allows both of partners to spend quality time with each other, as opposed to being weighed down by day-to-day responsibilities.

Falling in Love With Cupcakes

                                Pic Courtesy: Google Image Search

Walking out of the bakery I adjusted my purse, and opened the box of a single blueberry cupcake... I took in the aroma... and with a deep breath bit into it. I wish I could share it with the world, and scream out loud and tell them how perfect my cupcake is. But I want to devour it for myself... and selfishly lick my  lips... let out a soft satisfying moan and go in for the second bite. My own personal individual portion of happiness... for me to cherish and me to enjoy and the for the world to only keep guessing how good it must be.

Eating cupcakes, feels much like falling in love. Every Time I have fallen in love... I think I put in a whole lot of effort keeping it a secret from all my friends and family, there is this heightened state of excitement that is there in being with someone that is not public knowledge... it's like my own personal haven. Much like walking into a bakery picking out the cupcake of my choice... The first bite is like the first kiss... every time they taste different. I am yet to find two cupcakes that taste the exact same, in texture flavor and taste.

While I know they say... that happiness multiplies upon sharing, there is still time for that. Cherish the cupcake of your choice with the topping that excites you... there will be time for sharing, let this one be just for you.
